Ariel is a character created for Walt Disney Pictures' 28th animated movie, The Little Mermaid (1989), and also appears in its prequel TV series (1992 - 1994), direct-to-video sequel The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea (2000), and direct-to-video prequel The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning (2008). Jodi Benson provides her voice in all official animated appearances and merchandise. She is the fourth member of the Disney Princess franchise, the first non-human princess, and also happens to be the only one who becomes a mother.
